December is a month of celebration. Besides Christmas, my Jewish friends just celebrated Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. Another important day is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year. Many cultures celebrated this day with unique traditions. In the Chinese tradition, the Winter Solstice is known as Dōngzhì (冬至), which literally translates to the Arrival of Winter. On this day, emperors of ancient China would hold grand ceremonies to worship gods of heaven and earth and ask for their blessings for the upcoming year. Today, let’s talk about the Winter Solstice and the interesting traditions that people hold on to this day.
