Bent Bicyclist's Wrench Multitool Restoration - Restoring Rusty Tools

Odd Tinkering
Odd Tinkering
I will restore this cool wrench multitool designed for bicyclists. It acts also as a tyre tool for removing the tyre of the bicycle. It is jammed and bent. Also the rust makes it very bad to use as a tyre tool because it will damage the wheels. After polishing it will slip between the wheel and tyre a lot easier. To disassemble the wrench I could have drilled out the pin and then removed the wheel and the lower jaw. But I didn't see any advantage in that compared to the method used. My method was much easier and less likely to cause permanent damage. After the disassembly I left the parts overnight in rust remover. After this I washed the parts in water. In my old videos I do it with the rust remover but using water will let me use the same rust remover longer. After the rust was gone I decided to fix the bent shaft. I heated the shaft from the bent area and bent it back while the wrench was in a vise. However this ruined whatever hardening there ever was. Before I could harden the tool I needed to file all the pits and sand it because it would be much more work after the steel is hardened. After everything was filed I used the furnace I made from a bucket to heat the shaft and hardened it in oil. Forge would be better but I only have a furnace and it seems to work. although it's not optimal because it a little awkward to put items in there. I didn't want to heat the whole piece with lower jaw and the wheel just to make sure I don't cause any unnecessary damage. After all I only needed to harden the jaw. So I used a small torch to heat the jaw and hardened it in oil as well. After the parts were hardened I started polishing them. After polishing I used an airbrush to paint the middle of the handle of the wrench. This allowed me to make a fade at the end of the tool rather than a hard edge. This was optimal because there was not a good point to put the hard edge to. Also it's a something I've not seen on tools and it compliments the way the handle turns into a tyre tool. I wasn't sure if it would look good but I think it looks great, especially with the red color and polished metal. Thanks for watching. Please let me know what do you think about it!
