A Minimalist Off-Grid Retreat for the Harsh Australian Landscape

Take another look at Elemental House, an off-grid retreat that faces all the elements that Australia has to offer. This modern cabin needs to contend with scorching summer sun, freezing winters, low-level cyclonic winds and the threat of bushfire. Being off-grid, you need to be smart not only with ensuring you have enough water storage, solar collection and the right waste system, but the home needs to be designed efficiently. As the architect, Ben Callery states, you won't ever have enough solar panels if the home isn't designed efficiently in the first place. With this in mind, the home gets the basics of sustainability right, with the right eaves to block out summer sun but let the winter sun in, good orientation and cross ventilation, reducing the need for excess energy usage.
